Dr Gopal Reddy was born in Nellore on 5th August 1907. He was inspired by the freedom movement at the tender age of 13 years. He won his first election in 1937 and continued his winning streak for long. He was in jail for several times during the freedom struggle. He worked as a minister in Rajaji’s cabinet in Madras state.

When Andhra state was formed with Kurnool as the capital, he served as its first chief minister. It was during this period that a bridge was built on the river Penna, now known as ‘Gopal Reddy Sethuvu’.

He served as the Information and Broadcasting minister in Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet. It was during his time that auditoriums were built in all state capitals to commemorate the centenary celebrations of Rabindranath Tagore, including Ravindra Bharathi in Hyderabad. An auditorium was also built in Kasturba School in Nellore.

He also served as the governor of Uttara Pradesh for 5 years before his retirement from active politics and later shifted to Nellore permanently.
