SEIL Energy (Formerly Sembcorp) Thermal Power Plant

SEIL Energy India Limited is a prominent independent power producer (IPP) dedicated to contributing to India’s energy security [1, 2]. Formerly known as Sembcorp Energy India Limited, the company has a strong track record of developing and operating thermal power generation assets [1].

Operations and Location

The core of SEIL Energy’s operations is a 2.64 GW supercritical thermal power generation complex located in the SPSR Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, India [1, 2]. This complex consists of four 660 MW supercritical coal-fired units [1, 5]. The plants are situated at two sites: Pynampuram/Nelaturu Village and Ananthavaram Village/Varakavipudi Panchayat, both in Muthukur and Thotapalli Gudur Mandals of Nellore [3, 4].

The company secures its fuel requirements through a blend of domestic and imported coal. It has a long-term fuel supply agreement with a subsidiary of Coal India Limited for domestic coal and a long-term contract for imported coal with PT Bayan Resources TBK [6].

Corporate History and Ownership

Initially a part of Sembcorp Industries (a Singapore-based company), Sembcorp Energy India was an unlisted public company [1, 4]. In 2022, Sembcorp Industries announced the sale of its entire stake in SEIL to Tanweer Infrastructure, an Oman-based consortium [5]. This acquisition allowed Sembcorp to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions intensity and focus on its renewable energy portfolio, while Tanweer Infrastructure became the sole shareholder of SEIL [5].

Key Facts & Business Model

SEIL Energy provides reliable and essential electricity to consumers across the subcontinent through power purchase agreements (PPAs) [1, 6]. The company has PPAs with distribution utilities in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Haryana, and the Bangladesh Power Development Board [6]. The business model is supported by a significant portion of its operational capacity being tied up in long-term and medium-term PPAs, ensuring revenue visibility [6].
